Yesterday, on June 3rd 2006, the Montenegrin parliament declared Montenegro independent, following a referendum held on May 21 in which 55.5% voted for ending the union with Serbia. Big fan of self-determination as I am, I can only say congratulations to the people of Montenegro.In many respects, Montenegro already enjoyed a large degree of independence, but it's nevertheless welcome news.
People a lot smarter than I have speculated as to how this may impact the future of Kosovo. Personally I'm of the opinion that full-on independence is the only way to go.
Kosovo's status is set to be determined before the end of this year. We'll see what happens.
